Taken from academic life: Conference "Three steps to life. Management in the acute phase of stroke"

"Procedure in the acute phase of stroke" - this is a topic considered by specialists, but it is a general social issue, because it raises a problem that can potentially concern everyone. Various issues were discussed in the university hall, including medical issues, because we often talk about prevention, i.e. prevention of various types of diseases. Today's conference, apart from the important message of calling for stroke prevention, will also bring a large dose of information on procedures, principles of conduct in the event of stroke symptoms and treatment of patients. We (non-specialists, including students, pupils) will learn how this process looks "from the inside", from a different perspective. What - included in the title of the conference - "three steps to life" should be taken," said the host of the university, its rector, prof. Marek Delong, opening - as a co-organizer - the meeting within the university walls.
To best present the problem
The conference was organized by the Provincial Hospital of St. Padre Pio in Przemyśl and the Przemyśl Provincial Emergency Medical Service in cooperation with the State Academy of Applied Sciences in Przemyśl. Dr. Barbara Stawarz, Director of the Hospital, thanked the co-organizers, including the Rector and Rafał Kijanka, Director of the Emergency Medical Service and Dr. Luiza Balicka-Adamik, Head of the Neurology Department with the Stroke Unit, for taking up the challenge of preparing such a large event. "They are experiencing, they are involved, because they want to present the problem in the best possible way," the Director summed up.
The brain is time
The problem is of great importance, because "the brain is time" - as Rafał Kijanka emphasized many times during his lecture inaugurating the meeting. Introducing the stroke procedure, he drew attention to factors that can speed it up and were implemented in Przemyśl, shortening the time of drug administration to 8 minutes. From the website of the Przemyśl Neurology Department we learn that: "in September 2019, the department was distinguished with the international Angels Initiative - Platinum Status award. The ESO ANGELS award was created to express recognition and honor teams and individuals involved in improving care for stroke patients, as well as to establish a culture of continuous quality monitoring."
Lectures, panels, discussions, screenings…
A group of specialists, including representatives of the Podkarpacie medical community, with great commitment, in order to convey a clear message, presented the principles of conduct in the event of a stroke diagnosis. The most important goal is to "prevent neurological deficits, and therefore give the patient the medicine as soon as possible" - assured doctor Ewa Serkiz, adding that it cannot be given to every patient, but in most people it is qualified.
The conference was attended by PANS students, mainly from medical fields, i.e. nursing and physiotherapy.
The conference was held under the honorary patronage of the Marshal of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship.
